Community Research ServicesConsulting Division — Housing Needs Assessment
This report entails a broad examination of a community’s overall housing situation, from luxury homes and condominiums to entry-level homes and affordable apartments. Our assessments examine the effectiveness of existing housing options and determine the potential need for new housing initiatives. Previous experience within various types of markets allows the staff at Community Research to directly meet the needs of local governments and non-profit groups that require housing needs evaluations.
A needs assessment generally examines the existing housing stock in terms of overall housing needs by various neighborhoods/regions within the target area, including various structure types, renter versus owner considerations, renovation/rehabilitation needs, and the potential demand for additional housing alternatives. This is accomplished by collecting primary data at the neighborhood level, as well as compiling housing-related data from public and private community leaders across the target area. This primary data would be correlated with historical trends from the U.S. Census, state-based data clearinghouses, available local sources, and other third-party organizations that provide such information. Specific recommendations are included to address perceivable housing deficiencies and alleviate potential future housing imbalances as they relate to projected population, income, and economic trends.
Recently completed needs assessments include:
- Eastern Huron County, MI
- Manistee County, MI
- Lenawee County, MI
- Northwest Lower Michigan (Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau Counties)
Turnaround time, pricing and the information included in a project vary depending on scope.
